Check your university’s variant first

Harvard is not a single standard. It is a family of author-date styles, and UK universities do it differently. Cite Them Right Harvard, Leeds Harvard and Coventry Harvard all disagree. They differ on brackets around the year, on "edn" versus "ed.", and on whether titles take sentence case or title case.

Select your style at the top of the tool. Harvard (Cite Them Right) is the default because it is by some distance the most commonly adopted variant in the UK. Search your library website for "referencing guide" to confirm which one your department marks against, and adjust the output if it differs.

What the generator cannot do for you

A generator formats whatever data you give it. It cannot tell you that the author of a government web page is the department, not a named civil servant. It cannot tell you the date you copied is the last-modified date, not the publication date. Those calls are yours, and that is where most reference-list errors start.

  • Check the author. For organisational sources it is usually the organisation.
  • Check the date. Use the publication date, not today’s date or a copyright footer year.
  • Use sentence case for article and book titles in Cite Them Right — capital on the first word and proper nouns only.
  • Add an access date for web sources; Cite Them Right requires it.
  • Alphabetise the finished list by author surname.

This tool handles the mechanical part. When the problem is judgement rather than formatting, our referencing & citation help service puts a UK subject specialist on it.

Reference generator — your questions

Is this really free?

Yes. No account, no email, no usage limit. It runs entirely in your browser, which is also why we never see what you paste into it.

Which styles does it cover?

All eight major UK styles: Harvard (Cite Them Right), APA 7th, MLA 9th, OSCOLA, Vancouver, IEEE, Chicago and MHRA. Harvard itself has university-specific variants — if your department uses Leeds or Coventry Harvard the differences are small but real, so check your library guide.

Does it handle OSCOLA, APA and the rest?

Yes — OSCOLA, APA 7th, MLA, Vancouver, IEEE, Chicago and MHRA are all built in. Pick the style at the top of the tool and every reference reformats instantly. For converting a long existing list, our referencing service does it in about two hours.
