What a similarity score actually means

There is no universal pass mark, and anyone who tells you 15% is "safe" is guessing. A similarity score is a measurement, not a verdict. A dissertation with a 22% score that is almost entirely correctly quoted and cited methodology text is fine. A 9% score where those nine per cent are an uncited paragraph lifted from a journal is misconduct.

What matters is the composition of the score, which is why we send the full report rather than a number.

Reducing similarity honestly

There is an honest way to lower a score, and a dishonest one. The dishonest route means spinner tools, swapping in synonyms, invisible characters or white text. Universities catch all of it routinely. It also produces unreadable writing, and it turns a citation problem into an accusation of deliberate cheating. We will not do it, and nor should you.

The legitimate route is to fix the underlying cause:

  • Cite what is not yours. Most flagged matches are citation failures, not theft, and adding the citation resolves them outright.
  • Quote properly. If the exact words matter, use quotation marks and a page number. Quoted material is expected and excludable.
  • Paraphrase at the level of the idea. Read the source, close it, write the point in your own sentence structure, then cite it. Swapping individual words while keeping the sentence shape is still plagiarism and still matches.
  • Synthesise. Two or three sources supporting one point, compared in your own sentence, cannot match anything β€” and it is what earns higher bands anyway.
  • Configure the report correctly. Excluding the bibliography and quoted material often removes a large slice of a frightening-looking score.

AI-detection screening

UK universities increasingly run AI-detection alongside similarity checks. These tools are far less reliable than similarity matching, and they produce false positives. That hits hardest if you are writing in a second language, or in a formal, structured style.

We screen your document and flag the passages likely to get marked, so nothing takes you by surprise. Sometimes a passage is your own work but still reads as machine-written: every sentence the same length, a narrow vocabulary, no hedging. We show you how to rework those while keeping your meaning. We do not offer any service to disguise AI-generated work as your own.

Ask a specialist

Plagiarism & similarity β€” your questions

Will my work be stored in a student database?

No. We check against the repository without submitting your document to it, so your own later submission to your university will not match itself. That is exactly what happens if you use an unreliable free checker.

What similarity score is acceptable?

It depends on your department and the composition of the score. Many UK departments look closely above 20%, but a well-cited dissertation can sit higher legitimately. Read the breakdown, not the headline number.

Can you guarantee 0% similarity?

No, and any service that does is misleading you. Correctly quoted material, your reference list and standard disciplinary phrasing all match by design and should.

How fast is it?

Most documents come back inside an hour. Long theses over 20,000 words can take up to three.
