  • Business, law, healthcare, management and education cases
  • Recommendations with implementation detail, not platitudes
  • UK regulatory and market context throughout

Why most case study submissions lose marks

Three failures account for the overwhelming majority of mid-band case study marks, and all three are structural rather than a matter of writing quality.

  1. Description instead of diagnosis. The submission retells the case back to a marker who wrote it. Nothing is being analysed, so nothing can be credited as analysis.
  2. A framework applied for its own sake. A SWOT grid appears, is filled in, and is never referred to again. The framework has to change the conclusion or it is decoration.
  3. Recommendations with no implementation. "The company should improve communication" is not a recommendation. Who does what, by when, funded how, and what happens if it fails — that is a recommendation.

Choosing the analytical framework

The framework is a decision, not a default. Picking the wrong one is why an otherwise competent analysis reads as unfocused. Our specialists select on the basis of what the question is actually asking you to establish.

Framework selection by question type
If the question asks about…UseBecause
External pressures on the organisationPESTLEForces the analysis outward, across six distinct domains
Industry attractiveness or competitive positionPorter's Five ForcesStructural, and resists vague talk of "competition"
Internal capability and strategic fitVRIO or SWOT with weightingDistinguishes a resource from an actual advantage
Legal liability in a problem questionIRAC or CLEOKeeps issue, rule, application and conclusion visibly separate
A clinical incident and your responseGibbs or DriscollProgramme specifications usually name the model explicitly
Why a failure happened5 Whys or IshikawaTraces causation rather than listing symptoms
Stakeholder conflictMendelow power/interest gridProduces prioritised, defensible action

The structure that markers expect

  1. Situation summary — short. Two hundred words at most. The marker knows the case.
  2. Problem definition — the single sentence stating what actually has to be decided. Get this wrong and everything after it is wasted.
  3. Framework application — the analytical engine, with evidence drawn from the case and from external sources.
  4. Options — usually three, each with costs, risks and a realistic assessment of feasibility.
  5. Recommendation — one option, chosen, with the reasoning for rejecting the others made explicit.
  6. Implementation — owners, sequence, timescale, budget, and the metrics that will show whether it worked.
  7. Limitations — what the analysis could not establish, and what additional information would change the answer.

Sector-specific case study support

Business, MBA and management

Financial data interpreted, not just restated. Competitors benchmarked against real UK market figures. Strategy grounded in the rules that actually apply, from the CMA, the FCA or your sector regulator.

Law

Problem questions worked through IRAC with the right authority. Statute cited by section, cases cited in OSCOLA, and the ratio kept separate from obiter wherever that matters to the argument.

Nursing and healthcare

Clinical cases anchored in NICE guidance, NMC or HCPC standards, and current NHS policy. Reflective models are applied properly, and patient confidentiality is protected throughout in line with the NMC Code.

Ask a specialist

Case study analysis — your questions

Can you analyse a case my university wrote itself?

Yes, and those are usually the strongest submissions because the case is unfamiliar to everyone. Upload the case document with your brief. Nothing you send is shared or reused.

Which framework will you use?

Whichever your brief names. If the brief leaves it open, your specialist picks the one the question needs and explains why in the submission. Justifying your choice of framework earns marks in its own right.

Do you handle legal problem questions?

Yes, through IRAC or CLEO as your department prefers, with OSCOLA citation, correct statutory references and current authority. See our law page for detail on scope.

How long does a case study take?

Twelve hours at a minimum for a short case. Give us 48 to 72 hours and the analysis is noticeably better, because there is time to research the outside evidence properly.
