How Pearson grading actually works

This is the rule students most often get wrong, and it costs them a grade. The criteria build on each other, and each level is a gate. You cannot average your way up to a Distinction. You hit every Pass criterion first, then every Merit criterion, and only then does anyone look at the Distinction criteria.

What each band requires
BandRequirementWhat the writing must do
Pass (P)All P criteria metDescribe, identify, explain β€” demonstrate knowledge accurately and completely
Merit (M)All P criteria plus all M criteriaAnalyse and apply β€” use the knowledge on a real context, showing why it matters
Distinction (D)All P and M criteria plus all D criteriaEvaluate and justify β€” weigh alternatives, reach a reasoned judgement, recognise limitations

Pathways we cover

  • HND/HNC Business β€” including units on the business environment, marketing essentials, management and operations, management accounting, and business research project.
  • HND/HNC Computing β€” programming, networking, professional practice, database design and development, security, and the computing research project.
  • HND/HNC Engineering β€” engineering design, engineering maths, engineering science, managing a professional engineering project, and mechanical or electrical specialist units.
  • HND/HNC Health and Social Care β€” the principles of health and social care practice, demonstrating professional principles, supporting significant life events, and safeguarding.
  • HND/HNC Construction and the Built Environment, Hospitality Management, Applied Sciences, Art and Design, and Sport.
  • BTEC Level 3 Nationals across business, health and social care, IT, engineering, applied science and sport.

Vocational evidence and the assessor’s expectations

BTEC and HN qualifications are vocational, and assessors want applied evidence rather than textbook recitation. A Merit criterion asking you to analyse marketing strategy for an organisation is not satisfied by analysing marketing strategy in the abstract.

  • A real organisation used consistently across the unit, with real data where it is publicly available.
  • Workplace observation where you are employed in the sector, anonymised appropriately.
  • Sector context β€” the actual regulatory environment, real competitors, current market conditions.
  • Vocational format wherever the brief names one. Assessors mark a report as a report. Hand in an essay when a business report was asked for and you lose marks on the presentation criteria.
  • Evidence appendices β€” screenshots, calculations, plans, drawings β€” referenced from the main text rather than dumped at the end.

Resubmissions and the 15-day window

Pearson policy normally allows one resubmission opportunity within fifteen working days of your feedback, at the assessor’s authorisation. That window is short and it does not extend, so speed matters more here than almost anywhere else.

  1. Send the assessor feedback form with your original submission β€” the feedback maps directly to criteria, which makes the fix precise.
  2. We rewrite only the sections carrying unmet criteria.
  3. You receive a criteria table showing where each previously unmet criterion is now evidenced.
  4. Twenty-four hour turnaround available, because resubmission deadlines rarely wait.

Ask a specialist

BTEC, HND & HNC β€” your questions

Can you write to Distinction level?

Yes, and Distinction work costs more because it requires genuine evaluative depth across every criterion. Note that Distinction requires all Pass and Merit criteria too, so the submission is longer as well as more demanding.

What is the difference between HNC and HND?

HNC is Level 4, roughly the first year of a degree, typically 120 credits. HND is Level 5, roughly the second year, typically 240 credits, and usually allows top-up entry to the final year of a bachelor’s degree.

Do you cover units from my specific centre?

Send the assignment brief. Centres write their own briefs against Pearson unit specifications, so the brief is what we work from rather than a generic template.

How fast can a resubmission be done?

Twenty-four hours in most cases. Send the assessor feedback along with the original and we can be precise about what needs to change.
