Why proposals get sent back

Supervisors reject proposals for a small and highly predictable set of reasons. None of them is bad writing.

  • The question is too broad. "The impact of social media on mental health" is a research programme, not a dissertation. It needs a population, a timeframe, a platform and a measurable outcome.
  • The methodology does not answer the question. A survey cannot tell you why people behave as they do; interviews cannot tell you how many of them do it.
  • Access is assumed. If your design requires NHS patients, school pupils or a named company’s staff, you need a realistic route to them before the proposal is credible.
  • Ethics are an afterthought. Vulnerable participants, sensitive data or covert observation will not clear review as a paragraph tacked on at the end.
  • The timeline is fantasy. Twelve weeks for recruitment, fieldwork, transcription, analysis and writing is not a plan a supervisor will sign.

What we build into a proposal

  1. Working title, precise enough that the scope is visible from the title alone.
  2. Background and rationale, establishing the gap from current literature rather than asserting one.
  3. Research aim, plus two to four objectives that decompose it into work you can actually do.
  4. Research questions or hypotheses, expressed so an answer would be recognisable.
  5. Methodology — philosophy, approach, strategy, sampling, instruments and analysis, each choice justified against the question.
  6. Ethical considerations, mapped to your institution’s review process and the relevant professional code.
  7. Timeline as a Gantt chart with contingency built in.
  8. Anticipated contribution and known limitations.
  9. Indicative bibliography in your required style.

Annotated bibliographies that earn their marks

An annotation is not an abstract. Summarising the source earns almost nothing, because the marker can read the abstract themselves. Each annotation needs to cover the method used and how strong the evidence is. Then comes the part that separates the grade bands: how that source relates to the others in your set.

We write annotations of 150 to 200 words. About a third goes to summary and two thirds to critique and connection. That is the ratio most UK rubrics reward.

Ethics: the section that delays graduation

Ethics review is the most common reason a dissertation runs late. If it is rejected you resubmit at the next committee meeting, which often costs you a month. Getting it right first time is worth more than any other single improvement to a proposal.

  • Informed consent — participant information sheet and consent form drafted in plain English at an appropriate reading level.
  • Data protection — UK GDPR lawful basis identified, retention period stated, anonymisation or pseudonymisation described concretely.
  • Vulnerable groups — additional safeguards where participants are under 18, patients, or in a dependent relationship with you.
  • Right to withdraw — a stated deadline after which withdrawal is not possible, and why.
  • Risk assessment — to participants and to you, including lone-working where fieldwork is involved.

Ask a specialist

Research papers & proposals — your questions

Can you help with a PhD or funding proposal?

Yes. Doctoral and funding proposals go to specialists with research degrees in the field. We price them separately because they need a real command of the current literature.

Will you write my ethics application?

We draft it, including participant information sheets and consent forms, mapped to your institution’s form. You must review and submit it yourself — you are the researcher and the declaration is yours to make.

My supervisor rejected my proposal. Can you fix it?

That is one of our most common requests. Send us the proposal and your supervisor’s comments. We deal with each point specifically and send back a rework, with a short note explaining what changed and why.
